How our trailer conforms to the thriller genre.

Using a police man made our trailer seem much more realistic, along with being part of the iconography that makes our film a trailer.

This shot of the newspaper we created also made our trailer much more realistic.

This was one of the shots we used to adapt the voyeurism theory to our trailer, putting the audience on the same level as Oli, watching his mom and step-dad.

We used this shot to establish Dylan as the main character and show that he is dominant throughout the trailer.

Genre Theory

We chose the idea of a child killer, to slightly break the boundaries of the thriller genre. This meant that we had to build up the conventions of the genre though other things such as the iconography - the use of the woods, and the police and the idea that Dylan is missing. The conventions of the thriller genre are often to do with the editing. We used Quick cuts and camera angle changes are used and music that creates tension. . Thrillers often involve the use of mirrors or stairs which we created shots based on both.

Voyeurism

Most thrillers use voyeuristic elements, Hitchcock pioneered the use of a camera to mimic how people see, encouraging viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. For example Psycho has many voyeuristic pleasures for the audience, including the main character Norman Bates alongside many other characters in the film. We adapted this idea for our film by using mirrors to reflect the voyeurism. We used a shot of Dylan in the rear view mirror, to show him watching over his mom and step dad and also the shot of Dylan in the window, watching his step dad reading the paper. This means that audience members will be encourages to enjoy Dylans watching, aligning them with him as a character.

Our final Trailer.

Warner Brothers

Warner Bros. produces and distributes between 18 and 22 films each year. The company either fully finance or co-finaces the films it produces and maintains its worldwide distribution rights. It also distributes films that are totally financed and produced by third-parties. the company is a global leader in the marketing and distributing of feature films, with offices in more than 30 countries, releasing films in over 120 international territories.New Line Cinema, part of Warner Bros. Entertainment since 2008, coordinates its development, production, marketing, distribution and business affairs activities with Warner Bros. The company’s vast library, considered one of the best and largest in the world, consists of more than 6,650 feature films, which means 6,650 trailers. In 2010, the Warner Bros. Pictures Group broke the all-time industry worldwide box office record with receipts of $4.814 billion. In the same year Warner Home Video was, once again, the industry’s leader, with an overall 20.6 percent market share in total DVD and Blu-ray sales.

We chose Warner Bros as our trailer distributer due to their amazing reputation in the market. Having your film distributed by Warner will mean that many Warner fans watch it, let alone all the audiences you build up yourself.

History of Film Trailers

The first promotional trailer was not made for a feature film, it was created as a promotional device for a musical. The first film trailer was produced by the same person in 1914 for a Charlie Chaplin film. Up until the 1950's trailers was made by the National Screen Service, who were hired by film companies to create the trailers. The early trailers consisted of short clips showing key features of the film, alongside narration and a soundtrack. They also included text and a cast run. Casablanca is an example of one of the first film trailers.

As films changed throughout the 60's, so did trailers. The huge change in culture bought on a change in how films should be advertised.Andrew J. KuehnAndrew J. Kuehn was a very influential trailer producer, he changed the way trailers were made for his 1964 trailer for the film 'Night of the Iguana'. He went on to produce trailers for Steven Spielberf films, including the massive 'ET'

Designing our poster

This is how our poster began. After analysing some current film posters, we started to create our own. We used Oli in the background as the main character dylan, appearing to look over his mom and step-dad, making the poster look quite menacing. We used the woods as the background as this is where most of our trailer will be filmed.

We decided on taking a still shot for the photo, not as shot of the trailer as it will look much more effective for the genre we are working in.

This is our posted, when we re-drew a second draft and added colour, we liked the idea of having the same 'flashback' as the first, but putting a bloody number 2 behind it as this fits in with the genre, as well as linking the film in with the first one.

We are really happy with this, and are just going to take the photo and see how it works when using photoshop to edit it.

Synopsis of Plot

Our trailer is picking up where our first project ‘Flashback’ left off. It will feature the same characters playing the same roles; I will feature as Dillon the troubled teenager who is now on the run after a bloody exchange with Dillon’s mums (Ellie) new boyfriend, Steve.

Our trailer will focus around how things turned out after the cliffhanger we used to end Flashback which was the uncertainty around the outcome of the altercation between Dillon and Steve. It will feature Dillon supposedly being on the run from his parents, but after a bloody altercation the police gain involvement and its turns in to a search for this troubled runaway child, but little do Steve and Ellie know Dillon is looking for them too with revenge set on his mind. The trailer will contain footage such as the aftermath of the showdown between Steve and Dillon, where the audience will gain a partial insight in to what happened between the pair and where they now stand. Steve will be living in fear with Dillon still on the lose making us able to show the paranoia experienced first hand.

We will be able to show the fear the young teenager Dillon will be creating around his once loved ones and how he will go to any extent to seek the revenge he desires so much. The audience will be shown Ellie and Steve moving house in a bid for safety, however Dillon is only ever around the corner and is aware of their move. With their new location secured and beginning to start a new life, Ellie and Steve think they can put this ordeal behind them. However Dillon has other ideas, and Steve and Ellie remain top of his vendetta list.

Before long Dillon gets his wish and is granted an opportunity to take his revenge. In his second and ultimately his last showdown with Steve, Dillon takes no chances and goes correctly about taking his moms boyfriend Steves life in front of her own eyes. With Ellie quick on the phone to police, she calls and tells them where to find her own son. The police shortly arrive and ensure the capture of Dillan who will now face a spell in prison. However will this be the end of it all or is there more to come from this teenage murderer?

Magazine Cover Analysis

This is another Empire magazine. In contrast to the other Empire magazine, the main image of the magazine is taken from the film instead of a specifically shot photo, however it uses a binary-opposite. The dark background mirrors the darkness of the film and the use of the green is eye-catching to get the readers hooked. Also not so much in 'The Dark Knight' but in the older Batman films the iconic colour of The Joker is green so batman 'fanatics' will realise this and they are the people who are more likely to be reading film magazines.

We really like how the joker's head is covering the 'empire' title, making it look like he is in control, we are thinking of using something like this for our cover.

This magazine issue of Total Film is not how it would normally look, they've changed it to look like its part of the film 'Inception'. The 'Total Film' is normally in just white font. However for this issue they've changed it so it looks more like the film, the colour blue fits Inception because in all the dvd covers and film poster this is the colour they've used so fans of the film will see this and recognise the familiarity. Much like Empire the main in the centre of the magazine is the main character of the film, making him a focus point. The picture is taken directly from the film, being different to many still shots that are often used for marketing purposes. Important side headings stand out against the blue, which draw's attention to other things in the magazine to show it is not entirely 'inception' focused.

Again, we really like to actor placed over the title, alongside making the whole cover fit with the theme of our trailer.

Sight and Sound is very different to Empire and Total Film. Its more for the die hard movie fans as it looks towards the background of the films and the actors, however it follows the main conventions of any magazine. TH=he name of the magazine stands out above the main star unlike the empire cover. The only thing it doesn't have is sub stories like Empire& Total Film, it is much more focused on the main star in the middle.

When it comes to doing our magazine we are going to stay more to the much more commercial Empire and Total Film side rather then Sight and Sound.

Again like the other Total Film magazine, it follows the style of the film, again changing the title to fit with the films 'theme'. Orange is the main colour of the dvd covers and poster, creating a brand image for the whole marketing package. The other stories in the magazine are also made to stand out, again showing viewers they are versatile with the stories they cover. Unlike Sight and Sound this magazine offers side stories instead of just the one main one.

We really like the idea of changing the title to fit with our film, making it a unique issue of the magazine.

Target Audience

Our film is targeted at a wide range of audience not just one certain group. The age is anything from teenagers of 15 to the older audience, late forty’s.
A thriller doesn’t have one direct target audience, it depends on the type of film it is. For example, a thriller such as Black Swan, may be seen as more of a female film because its do to with ballet. As is the case for a film like Se7en, focuses on some brutal crime may be more suitable to a male audience.
Certificate:

The certificate for our film is a 15. This is because to contains violence that younger viewers may find distressing and because it’s a 15 and not an 18, there will be more of an audience that will be able to watch the film.

Discussion of actors, props and costume

Actors
The actors in our trailer will be; Oli Moore, Carl Donaldson, Ellie-Mae Wood and Graham Donaldson. Oli will play the part of Dylan the killer and the evil son, carrying on his role in the last film. Like wise with Carl & Ellie. Ellie the mum of Dylan and Carl is playing Steve the boyfriend to Ellie. Also Graham will be in the film, playing the policeman. We have chosen these people to act as these characters as it fits in with our AS project, which was the opening to Flashback, the first film.
Locations
Locations in the film will be Carls house, the same location as last time, this is because we need to show Ellie and Steve moving into a new house. The new house will be Ellies house, as the way the stairs are right by the front door, and the size of the drive will work really well with some of the shots we want to use. Other locations used will be Apley Woods and a phone box.
Props
Key props used in our film will be, Dylans bloody shirt, the newspaper of Dylan, photos of Ellie and Steve, Police car and a knife.
Costumes
Costumes used are, Dylan will be in the bloody shirt and a black hoodie. Grahams costume will be the Police uniform and Steve and Ellie will be wearing a range of different causal clothes fitting in with different 'days' in the full film. We decided on these after looking at our trailer analysis, looking at what costumes they are wearing, and how realistic they look.
